Funeral Policies for Mystical Rose Oratory

Funeral Policy for Mystical Rose

While Mystical Rose Oratory is the locus for Catholic worship on the Chaminade University/Saint Louis School campus, it is not the same as a local parish church with a full time staff of priests and special ministers.  Therefore, outside of regularly scheduled Eucharists and religious services, it is not able to satisfy all requests that might be made for funerals.  Understanding the limitations of the Oratory, you may request a Catholic Funeral  provided the deceased indicated the desire for a Catholic funeral service and meets one of the following criteria:

1.) an active member of the Mystical Rose Community,

2) a current faculty or staff member of Chaminade University or Saint Louis School.

3.) a graduate of Saint Louis School or Chaminade University.

Requests are directed to the respective Campus Ministry Teams or to one of the Marianist priests.

Funerals are directed by an ordained Catholic minister.  Funerals are required to remain within the guidelines of the Catholic Church and the Diocese of Honolulu.  Eulogies for funerals are given prior to the beginning of the funeral liturgy and are, typically, kept under 10 minutes with no more than two speakers.

A donation of $500, covers the use of the space and the  stipend for the sacristan.   It does not include a stipend for the celebrant nor payment for the musicians, both of which are addressed separately.    In all cases, financial hardship may be taken into consideration.

Campus Ministry Programs and the presider will approve the musicians along with musical selections, especially if the musicians are not associated with Mystical Rose.  Rock bands and “entertainment” bands are not acceptable.  No outside technical equipment such as sound equipment, mics, AV may be brought in.

It is expected that all photography and videography are done discretely, professionally, and from the back and side aisles of the chapel, never within the sanctuary or from the main aisle.

Those using the chapel are expected to ensure that all areas are clean and restored to proper condition at the end of the ceremony.   Use of the smoke free and alcohol free Pavilion in conjunction with the funeral is contracted separately.
